Summary

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Huntress and The Alice Network returns with another heart-stopping World War II story of three female code breakers at Bletchley Park and the spy they must root out after the war is over。

1940。 As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes。 Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything—beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses—but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets。 Imperious self-made Mab, product of east-end London poverty, works the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and looks for a socially advantageous husband。 Both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential in local village spinster Beth, whose shyness conceals a brilliant facility with puzzles, and soon Beth spreads her wings as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts。 But war, loss, and the impossible pressure of secrecy will tear the three apart。 1947。 As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip whips post-war Britain into a fever, three friends-turned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter--the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship and left one of them confined to an asylum。 A mysterious traitor has emerged from the shadows of their Bletchley Park past, and now Osla, Mab, and Beth must resurrect their old alliance and crack one last code together。 But each petal they remove from the rose code brings danger--and their true enemy--closer。。。

As always, I appreciated Quinn’s historical information and pictures provided to further support her decision making throughout the story。 While long, I learned more about BP and the code breaking efforts during WWII。 These were remarkable achievements - Quinn weaves fiction with history in a way that is relevant and engaging to the reader。

This WW2 story came from a completely different angle than any other war story I've read。 If it weren't for the mystifying descriptions of codebreaking that I simply could not wrap my brain around, I probably would have given it 5 stars。 There were a couple of surprises in the story that added some interest。 Overall an enjoyable read。 This WW2 story came from a completely different angle than any other war story I've read。 If it weren't for the mystifying descriptions of codebreaking that I simply could not wrap my brain around, I probably would have given it 5 stars。 There were a couple of surprises in the story that added some interest。 Overall an enjoyable read。 。。。more

I LOVED this book。 Flew through it and was so upset it was over。 I did like how it wrapped everything up in the epilogue because so many times i have so many more questions and want more! (But i did still want more of this book!!)If you liked/loved The Alice Network or The Huntress, my guess is you will love this too!

I actually rate this 4 1/2 stars 。 Three women, Beth, Osla, Mab。。。。。WWII。。。。 and a secret decoding facility in London to help the war effort。 This book has wonderful characters, with even a few real life people thrown in like Alan Turing and Prince Philip, the now Duke of Edinburough。 There’s a bit of mystery thrown in as there is a mole that sends one of the women at the end of the war to a insane asylum。 This is an easy, good, read and didn’t earn my 5 star rating simply because it was a bit f I actually rate this 4 1/2 stars 。 Three women, Beth, Osla, Mab。。。。。WWII。。。。 and a secret decoding facility in London to help the war effort。 This book has wonderful characters, with even a few real life people thrown in like Alan Turing and Prince Philip, the now Duke of Edinburough。 There’s a bit of mystery thrown in as there is a mole that sends one of the women at the end of the war to a insane asylum。 This is an easy, good, read and didn’t earn my 5 star rating simply because it was a bit fluffy and didn’t really leave me with any really good quotable material。 But I still really enjoyed it and loved the ending。 。。。more

My favorite type of historical fiction! Fast paced and interesting characters plus unique history stories that I never would have known about。 Loved everything about the codes and how it all comes together in the end。

I really enjoyed this book。 I had read The Alice Network previously。 In my opinion it does not hold a candle to The Rose Code。 I did receive this as a book give away。 I felt all of the characters were nicely wound together and their storylines were fully explored。 I wanted to read this book in one setting。 It was a very engaging read。

2。5 reallyThe first half is cheesy; better in the second half and the epilogue。 Not something to run out and get at least to my mind。

“Duty, honor, oaths—they are not just for soldiers。 Not just for men。” Excellent historical fiction - suspenseful and meticulously researched with three very different heroines who each use their strengths to help win WWII as part of the secretive Bletchley Park code-breaking project。

Mike

An important story to tell, but I thought it was a story difficult to follow and appreciate。 The novel was cryptic, slow and ponderous。

Outstanding! 5++stars。 Grab your tissue and be prepared to laugh, cry, and be totally engaged until the end of the book。 This is one of those books that when it's done, it's hard to start another because you know it just can't match up。 The characters are so real you feel like they are wonderful friends。 The narration by Saskia Maarleveld my all-time favorite female narrator is just exceptional。 Outstanding! 5++stars。 Grab your tissue and be prepared to laugh, cry, and be totally engaged until the end of the book。 This is one of those books that when it's done, it's hard to start another because you know it just can't match up。 The characters are so real you feel like they are wonderful friends。 The narration by Saskia Maarleveld my all-time favorite female narrator is just exceptional。 。。。more

Probably 4。5 stars but I rounded up because when I’ve forgotten all the things that happened in this book, I know it would be a fun one to read again。 Spies and war and women breaking codes—I love these sort of WWII books!

Kate Quinn's THE ROSE CODE intrigued me because of its premise: three women who become friends in England's famous Bletchley Park, only to become bitter enemies for reasons that remain as shrouded in mystery as the codes they break during WWII。 Spies, and a friends-to-enemies-to-(one hopes)friends yarn? Count me in。ROSE fluctuates between the women's time at Bletchley Park and the present, approximately three and a half years after the war。 They loathe one another and haven't spoken in years, un Kate Quinn's THE ROSE CODE intrigued me because of its premise: three women who become friends in England's famous Bletchley Park, only to become bitter enemies for reasons that remain as shrouded in mystery as the codes they break during WWII。 Spies, and a friends-to-enemies-to-(one hopes)friends yarn? Count me in。ROSE fluctuates between the women's time at Bletchley Park and the present, approximately three and a half years after the war。 They loathe one another and haven't spoken in years, until one, locked away in an asylum and due for a lobotomy to silence her, sends a coded message to her former friends begging (demanding) them to free her so they can break one last code and bring a traitor in their midst to justice。Who's the traitor? And what happened between these women—"Queen" Mab, tall and fierce, and determined to making something of herself and leave her life of poverty behind; Osla, a socialite determined to prove she's got brains and beauty; and Beth, a browbeaten spinster trapped at home with her bully of a mother and milquetoast father—that caused to go from as close as sisters to bitter enemies? Both questions are answered over satisfactory pacing and excellent character development, but Quinn rightfully prioritizes the latter。 Beth, Mab, and Osla struggle to prove their worth as patriots in a world dominated by men。 They do this by living their lives against war-torn backdrops, fighting as hard to discover who they are and what they want as they do in the war against Hitler and his Nazis。 Romance is involved, but all three women make sacrifices in their love lives to protect their work and their identities。Sacrifice lies at the heart of ROSE CODE。 Osla, Mab, and Beth grow stronger by making tough choices that go unappreciated by many of their male peers。 Quinn's book is as much a story about sisterhood as it is a drama about shining a light on the women of Bletchley Park, who toiled over enigmas that meant the difference between life and death。 The mystery of the spy's identity takes a backseat, but is no less exciting when the big reveal is made during the final act, set in the present day and spanning several chapters, all of which satisfy。So often in stories, we become attached to characters and settings, only to be ripped away from them due to narrative demands or shoddy writing。 Quinn's characters grow fond of the bond they formed at Bletchley Park; that bond is recreated when they need one another most。 It bears repeating: This act is enormously satisfying。As for what caused the rift in their relationship, that revelation delivers as well, but I won't say more for fearing of ruining the mystery。 Read ROSE CODE if you enjoy character studies, drama, mysteries, or any combination of the above。 。。。more

This is a story to truly take you away! Wow。 5 stars all the way! Truly remarkable book。 What an intriguing, original WWII story so masterfully told! This book is an outstanding example of historical fiction。 It ticks all the boxes。 Excellent research into historical facts and fantastic characterisation。 I fell in love with all three main characters and felt that they were really well developed and fleshed out。 I love the way the characters evolved and became involved in each of their stories。 I was surprised to discover that it was also a bit of a love story though predominately focusing on the efforts of the women in WW11 and the code break This book is an outstanding example of historical fiction。 It ticks all the boxes。 Excellent research into historical facts and fantastic characterisation。 I fell in love with all three main characters and felt that they were really well developed and fleshed out。 I love the way the characters evolved and became involved in each of their stories。 I was surprised to discover that it was also a bit of a love story though predominately focusing on the efforts of the women in WW11 and the code breaking that occurred。 I listened to it as an audiobook and I can’t fault Saskia Maarlaveld 。 Her various voices and the way she tells the story is a credit to her。 She has done Kate Quinn’s last three audiobooks and it is easy to see why。 I would go as far as saying I prefer Kate Quinn’s books on audio if Saskia is the narrator。 Highly recommend this book as a story to get lost in。 A standout in the genre of WW11 fiction。 。。。more
